You're almost a teenager! It's time to start thinking seriously about what you're going to wear for your first real dance. You want something that says, "I'm a grown-up," but also "I'm still kind of a kid." So how do you pull off both at once? There are lots of different ways to go with this, so let's talk about some options and make sure you find the right one for you.

It's the big day! You've been waiting for this for months, and now it's finally here: your 8th grade dance. You're so excited that you don't know what to wear.

You want something that's going to make you feel good about yourself, but you also want to be comfortable enough to dance all night long. The pressure is on!

When the school year ends, your kids will be heading off to their 8th grade dances. Whether you're going as a chaperone or just dropping them off, you want to make sure they look great!

The best way to do that is to have a plan. We've put together this blog post so you can get started on dressing your kid for their big night out.

The eighth grade dance is a milestone for your daughter. This is the first time she'll have spent so much time with her friends, and it's bound to be a very memorable event.

What should you wear? Well, if you want to look great and feel comfortable, here are some tips from our fashion experts:

*Wear what makes you feel confident. Don't worry about what other people will think—just pick something that makes YOU feel good about yourself!

*If there's a theme or dress code, pay attention to it. If there's nothing specific in mind, just make sure your outfit matches the tone of the dance: formal or casual.

*Don't forget shoes! Shoes matter more than any other part of an outfit because they're what keep us stable while we walk around all night long. Make sure they fit well and are comfortable enough for hours of dancing!

The 8th grade dance is a special time in any young person's life. It's a night to celebrate the end of the first half of middle school and the beginning of high school, and it's a chance to hang out with your friends before you all scatter across the country for college.

Ask older siblings or friends if you're not sure how formal the dance will be. Some dances are really casual, while others are a lot dressier. To make sure you dressed appropriately, ask around to find out how formal the dance is! You could ask students in a higher grade, older siblings, or even friends whose brothers or sisters have been to the dance before.
If you're still not sure, try asking your favorite teacher or guidance counselor what kids usually wear to the dance!

Follow your school's dress code if they have one. Your school might have a more relaxed dress code for dances, but they may still expect you to follow the same rules you do during the school day. If you're not sure, ask your teachers what the dress code for the dance will be.[1]
Some rules that you might have to follow could include no spaghetti straps or a skirt that comes down past your fingertips.

Wear a knee-length dress or a skirt and a nice top if it's a casual dance. Middle school dances are usually on the casual side, so a pretty dress or knee-length skirt and blouse should be perfect. A good guideline is to think about what would be appropriate to wear to a church service or a special occasion like an awards ceremony.[2]
Some options to consider might be a sundress with a cardigan, a ruffled skirt with a nice blouse, or a long-sleeved dress with a flared skirt and tights if the weather is cold.

Wear nice jeans or slacks and a tucked-in shirt to a casual dance. Going to a dance doesn't always mean you have to wear a suit and tie. A lot of dances in middle school are casual, so you can just wear something a little nicer than what you would normally wear to school. Nice jeans, khakis, or slacks and a button-down shirt or a polo should be perfect.[5]
If you're not sure whether the dance is casual or semi-formal, ask your friends, older siblings, or even your teachers to tell you what students usually wear.

Wear a sports coat and slacks if the dance is semi-formal. If you're going to a semi-formal dance, it's usually appropriate to wear a jacket. You can wear a sports coat with a nice shirt and slacks, and if you like, you can add a tie to your outfit to dress it up even more.[6]
If you don't want to wear a tie, you could wear a collared shirt, like a polo, with your sports coat or suit.

When you're picking out your suit, look for a jacket that fits you comfortably and doesn't feel tight under your arms or across your back. Wear a tie or a bow-tie to dress up a button-down shirt. If you're dressing up for a semi-formal dance, a tie can elevate your look to the next level. You can wear a tie that coordinates with your shirt, or if you prefer more of a nerdcore style, you can try a bow-tie!

Picking Your Accessories

Choose comfortable dress shoes to wear to the dance. The last thing you want is to miss out on dancing to your favorite song because your feet are hurting! Of course, you want your shoes to match your outfit, but the most important thing is to choose shoes that fit you comfortably.[7]
Your shoes shouldn't pinch your toes, they shouldn't slip off of your heels when you walk, and they should fit comfortably across the top of your foot.
When you're trying on shoes, try to visit the shoe store in the afternoon. Your foot naturally expands throughout the day, so buying shoes in the afternoon or evening can ensure you get a more comfortable fit.
If you're not used to walking in heels, stick to flats or a very low heel.

Select shoes which complement the style and color of your outfit. There are a lot of different options for dress shoes, so look for a style that coordinates with what you're wearing. If you can, bring your outfit along with you so you can compare colors and styles.
In addition to the color of the shoe, you should also think about how the style of the shoe will match your outfit. For example, a heavy, dark winter shoe wouldn't look right with lightweight, brightly-colored clothing.

Pick simple jewelry that goes with your outfit if you want to wear any. There's no need to go overboard with a ton of ornate, fancy jewelry. If you want to wear any accessories, a simple necklace, bracelet, earrings, or a nice watch are the perfect way to complement your look.
If your ears aren't pierced but you want to wear earrings, try clip-on earrings instead!
For a casual outfit, look for chunky, colorful jewelry, like fun bangles that match your outfit.

Carry a small clutch or crossbody if you want to bring a purse. You don't want to spend all night worrying about keeping up with a big purse. If you want something to carry your phone and your lip gloss,choose a lightweight option.[8]

Styling Your Hair and Makeup

Get your hair styled at a salon as a special treat. Getting your hair styled in a professional salon can make you feel–and look– like a whole new person. Most salons require that you make an appointment in advance, and there may be a fee involved, so ask your parents a few weeks before the dance if that might be an option for you.[9]
If you really want your hair done and your parents don't have the extra money, ask if you can pay for the visit out of your allowance, or offer to do odd jobs to earn a few dollars whenever you can.
Getting an updo can take a while, so be sure to schedule your appointment several hours before the dance begins. Don't forget to leave time for getting dressed!

Wear your hair up if you're going to a more formal dance. A formal dance is the perfect time to try out a new hairstyle. If you have long hair, consider wearing it up. You can include pretty barrettes, braids, or curled pieces into your style to make it look more interesting.[10]
There are tons of styles you can do with long hair, like French twists, ballerina buns, or a half updo with braids.
If you're not used to styling your own hair, ask a friend, parents, or older sibling to help you style your updo.

Leave your long hair down or in a ponytail for a more casual dance. For casual dances, there's no need to go to elaborate lengths with your hair. Brush out all of the tangles, then wear it down, pulled into a ponytail, or up in a messy bun. To ensure your hair stays in place, spray a little hairspray on your brush and lightly smooth it over your hair.[11]
If you want to, you can use a curling iron to carefully curl a few little pieces right around your face.

Comb your hair neatly if you have short hair. Short hair is easier to work with, but it can look messy if you don't take the time to style it. Comb your hair over to the side, slick it straight back, or style it into a pompadour or quiff to get the perfect dance 'do!
If you prefer a less put-together style, use gel, mousse, or hairspray to create messy spikes.
Make your short hair look more feminine with barrettes, a headband, or a flower pinned behind your ear.

Add extra flair to your hairstyle with cute hair accessories. When it comes to adding something special to your hair, the possibilities are nearly endless! From using a sparkly barrette to keep your bangs out of your face to topping off your 'do with a pretty tiara, use your imagination to create a look that's uniquely you!
Other options for hair accessories include lacy or jeweled headbands, clip-on hair flowers, and stick-on jewels.

Stick with light makeup if you're allowed to wear it. There will be plenty of time in your life for a full face of makeup. For now, let your natural youthful beauty shine through, and just stick to a little makeup if you wear any at all.[12]
If you do wear makeup, limit it to tinted moisturizer, a peachy-blush, mascara, and lip gloss.

Spritz on a little perfume, body spray, or cologne if you want to. You don't want to go overboard with this, since heavy scents can cause headaches or allergic reactions in some people. However, a little spray of perfume or cologne on your wrists or behind your ears can help you feel a little dressier as you head off to the dance.[13]

What to wear to an 8th grade graduation

Congratulations! You've made it to the big leagues. You're on your way to high school, and you're ready to take on the world.

But don't forget: looks matter, too.

You want to look good at your 8th grade graduation, because that's when everyone will be watching. You want them seeing you in a positive light and thinking of you as someone they can trust and rely on, not just as some kid who wore a weird outfit to their big day.

So what should you wear? Well, there are lots of options—it's up to you! But here are some tips for making sure that whatever outfit you choose is something that makes a good impression on everyone there.

When your child is graduating from eighth grade, you want to make sure they look their best. They will be walking across the stage and facing hundreds of people who are watching them with pride and admiration. You want them to feel confident in what they are wearing so that they can enjoy this moment without having to worry about how they look.

When shopping for an eighth grade graduation outfit, it's important to consider what type of event you're going to. If it's at a school, then you'll probably want something more casual. If it's at a hotel or other location, then you can go for something more formal and elegant.

You've made it. You're graduating from middle school and getting ready to move on to high school. How do you feel about that? Excited? Nervous? A little bit of both?

We know how hard it is to think about what to wear when you're still trying to figure out how much you love or hate your new growth spurt—and that's why we've put together this guide for you! Whether you're going with a group of friends or making a statement alone, we'll help you find the perfect outfit for your big day.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR GRADUATION
It is recommended that 8th graders refrain from buying their graduation dress
too early in the year. Students tend to grow a lot during the year, and may find that
what fit when they ordered it in the fall does not fit in the spring. If you think you may
order online, beginning the search in February might be appropriate. In-store shoppers
can wait till March or April. I would like to give some graduation dress guidelines that
can be followed whenever your family chooses to shop. Dresses worn should be
modest, and appropriate for a daytime ceremony, not a prom. Photo examples of
appropriate dresses are available from the teacher. Here is a quick reference guide:
The dress will:
• have two straps (no halter)
• cover all cleavage in front
• cover a bra in the back
• be modest in fit (not too clingy in the hips)
• fall between mid-calf and the usual uniform length (opaque)
• be plain or print, white or colored (reserving black for evening attire)
• avoid distracting decoration such as (but not exclusively) gems, feathers, fur,
animal print, writing, etc.
The shoes will:
• be dress shoes or sandals which allow the student easy, secure movement
• no sneakers, no flip flops; no platform shoes
(one inch or thicker under the ball of the foot)
• avoid distracting sparkles or gems (worn for evening events)
Here are a few descriptions of appropriate graduation wear to share with girls:
For a graduation ceremony, "the outfit will be similar whether you are the one
graduating or are in the audience. The best way to describe the dress code is 'Sunday
Best'. A sundress and heels is entirely acceptable. . .Think about what you might wear
to church on Easter Sunday and you are ready to go." (NashVogue.com)
"If you are a girl graduate, make sure that you wear something that is elegant
and chic, like a simple dress or a skirt and a blouse. . . Girls should opt for fairly dressy
shoes, like pumps or flats." (MyExpression.com)
"Women usually wear a cocktail dress to semi-formal events. . . A cocktail dress
is a woman's dress worn at cocktail parties and semi-formal occasions. The length of
cocktail dresses varies. . .Mid-calf is called tea length. When it is almost touching the
ankle it is called ballerina length, and. . .falls into the evening gown category."

On the first Tuesday in May, the girls are asked to bring their graduation dresses
to school for review (please keep your receipt just in case). It is fun for them to have a
chance to model for their classmates what they plan to wear, and it's helpful to have
the opportunity to address any potential issues (undergarments, straps, shoes, etc)
before graduation day. This gives us a month to solve any issues, and avoids the stress
of dealing with problems on the special day. If your daughter would like to bring two
dresses (because she's having trouble choosing, or thinks her first choice may not meet
requirements) she is welcome to do so.
Any student who does not bring a dress on Review Day will be assigned study
hall (unprepared). Each Tuesday thereafter, students who have not yet had a dress
approved will be assigned study hall. This means that dresses which are ordered online
rather than bought off the rack must be ordered early enough to arrive for Review Day.
If a student's dress requires alteration (to length, straps, etc.) after Review Day, she
should expect to serve a study hall each week until the alteration is shown. Exceptions
will not be made. Graduation day surprises are stressful and unpleasant for all
concerned.

Our new series, What to Wear to… will be showing you fun, stylish, and appropriate outfits for a variety of events. Today, we're talking about junior high or middle school graduations. Depending on your school, you might have an important graduation ceremony in 5th, 6th or 8th grade. Last week was all about getting our high schoolers ready for prom. This post is dedicated to helping our middle schoolers find beautiful outfits for their graduation or promotion day. Since most middle school graduates don't wear caps and gowns, you will need to find a special dress, and maybe new shoes, for your ceremony.

Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing your look:

School Dress Code – make sure you're aware of any attire rules. Does your school allow spaghetti straps or strapless dresses for graduation? Check your school handbook before shopping.
Short or Long? While prom goers can choose either a short or long gown, we recommend short (but never too short) dresses for middle school graduations.
Flats or Heels? The answer is: either. A low-mid heel that you can walk in easily is appropriate for graduation. We don't want you tripping when it's your turn on the platform! Dressy flats or low-heeled sandals are also perfect.
Wear it again! Choose a dress that you could also wear to a wedding, holiday party, theater production, or a school dance.
